She graduated from Georgetown University in 2012 with a Bachelors degree in History. Check out her review of her alma mater: VT:Describe the campus setting and transportation options.How urban or safe is the campus?Are there buses or do you need a car/bike? Sandy: Georgetown University is located in the Georgetown neighborhood of Washington, D.C., which is an urban environment. The campus was safe most of the time, but like any place, it's important to be careful and wise when walking around at night. I always thought it was best to walk with other people or to use the late-night shuttle service that the school provides, which is called Safe Rides. There are no metro (train) stops near Georgetown, but there are several buses that can take you to metro stops. Some students used bikes but I never needed a car, since I just used the buses. VT: How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants? Sandy: The professors were very available, both by email and via office hours. I never felt uncomfortable or intimidated about approaching a professor for help/questions. They really care about students. The teaching assistants are also great and I had some fun ones who were pretty funny and relaxed. I never really consulted my academic advisers except once or twice but they were approachable as well. VT: How would you describe the dorm life rooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? Sandy: The rooms are okay and the dining hall is also not bad. Of course, as with any dining hall, students may soon feel like they need to eat something outside of the dining hall options. But chicken finger Thursdays are the best! They also had great vegetarian chicken nuggets. The location of the school is not always convenient, since it's necessary to take buses to really go into the heart of D.C., but there were plenty of opportunities to explore, nonetheless. Also, there are many clubs and student organizations on campus, and it was also possible to successfully start organizations. VT: Which majors/programs are best represented and supported?What did you study and why? Did the university do a good job supporting your particular area of study? Sandy: Georgetown is very oriented towards Social Sciences and Languages. The Language departments are amazing. I was able to learn Italian and French because of my dedicated professors and the amazing departments. I also took Arabic, which is excellent at Georgetown. Economics, History, International Relations, etc. are all incredibly well represented at Georgetown and have amazing professors. I learned a lot as a History major because I feel the school provided a wide array of History courses. I really enjoyed my major and believe it was only made better by the dedicated professors. VT: How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Sandy: It was somewhat difficult for me in my freshman year, and I made more friends in the subsequent years. I believe many people started out with friends in freshman year that they then replaced with other friends later on. But this was a normal experience for many Georgetown students. Greek life does not play a significant role on campus, as we only have a handful of fraternities. I was in Alpha Phi Omega, which is a service fraternity. In fact, I ended up making many friends because of this fraternity. VT: How helpful is the Career Centerand other student support services?Do many reputable companies recruit on campus? Sandy: The Career Center is great for help with resumes and cover letters. I learned everything I know about formatting from the Career Center. They also allow students to sign up for newsletters for various industries, like Education and Government. Every year there are job fairs where many reputable companies (especially in the field of business) come to recruit students. VT: How are the various study areas such aslibraries, student union, and dorm lounges?Are they over-crowded, easily available, spacious? Sandy: The main campus library was a bit tricky to use during finals because so many people would pack into it and stay for extended periods of time. So, many people actually went to the Medical School library and studied there. There are also buildings where classes are normally held but where people can study instead. I used to go to the ICC galleria often. I knew people who went to the Business School or to Sellinger Lounge (in the Leavey Center) to study. Dorm lounges are okay but may be difficult sometimes because of people coming and going. VT: Describe the surrounding town. What kinds of outside establishments / things to do are there that make it fun, boring, or somewhere in between?To what extent do students go to the downtown area of the city versus staying near campus? Sandy: There is great shopping at Georgetown, as M Street NW is very close. There are great restaurants and some bars. Many people also liked to go to U Street, just to get off campus and go to other great restaurants. There is a movie theater near campus. It's not easy to be bored at Georgetown because of M Street and because of the possibilities D.C. provides. VT: How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Sandy: I liked the class sizes. My Languages classes were always small, which was great. As my History courses became more and more focused, those classes were also smaller. A small class for me was 15 20 students. I had large classes when the course was basic, like Intro to Ethics or Macroeconomics. Even then, there were always recitations with smaller groups and teaching assistants, where students could pose questions about anything they didn't understand during the larger lectures. VT: Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one youregretthe most. Sandy: I was an Italian minor at Georgetown and was extremely interested in becoming fluent. So, I would always go to one professor with articles in Italian that I wanted to discuss. She would always welcome me and did not mind my (possibly annoying) determination. Instead, she was happy I was so interested and gladly spoke to me whenever I found her in her office. The Growth of Online Tutoring One of the fastest-growing areas of AJ Tutoring’s services is online tutoring. As the director of online tutoring, I hear all kinds of questions about online tutoringâ€"this post will answer a couple of them! There are two broad categories of questions. First, how can online tutoring match in person tutoring? Second, what makes AJ Tutoring better than larger online tutoring companies?  Creating an Online Space to Match our In-Person EnvironmentAJ Tutoring has always been known for a commitment to qualityâ€"we’d rather not do something, than do it poorly. So, as more and more parents asked for online tutoring, we wanted to make sure we could deliver a quality service. There are three basic parts of making sure our online students get a great experience comparable to our in person students: the tutors, the online environment, and the materials.The TutorsOur online tutors get all the same training on our materials and academic subjects, and most work primarily in person. We use vid eo chat to get closer to the experience of tutoring; students can see and hear their tutors, and vice versa. This allows the tutors to pick up on the non-verbal cues that are important to tutoring. Additionally, our tutors all get specific training in using the online platform so that they can create the best possible experience for students. The Online EnvironmentWe primarily use a program called Conceptboard for our tutoring. This combines video chat with a large and multifunction virtual whiteboard. The whiteboard includes tools to allow tutors to type formulas, draw diagrams, upload images, and instantly draw common geometric shapes. Unlike a regular whiteboard, the online one persists between sessions, so students can always go back and look over the notes from the session; additionally, tutors are able to use the same whiteboard between sessions to more easily review and build on previous material.  For English and other writing projects, tutors often also utilize Google Docs and Google Chat, allowing them to look at documents at the same time as their students, both video chatting and leaving comments and making suggestions directly on the document. The Materials AJ Tutoring has fantastic materials for all of our test preparation programs. Students doing test preparation online with us are mailed physical copies of all those materials, so they have the same paper copies as in-person students. Additionally, the tutors upload pdfs of all the relevant materials, allowing them to annotate the documents like they would in an in office session, and leave the annotated documents online for the student to access later.  By re-creating these three elements as closely as possible, AJ Tutoring strives to make online tutoring comparable to our in-person tutoring.  Indeed, some aspects of online tutoring, such as the ability to revisit boards or record sessions at the students’ request, go above and beyond what is possible in a non-digital session.  How is AJâ €™s Online Tutoring Different than other Companies? AJ Tutoring is always looking to differentiate itself by the quality of the service we provide, by hiring the best educators we can, and by giving them ample support to develop their skills. 7 Common Scholarship Scams and How to Detect Them Image via pixabay.com 1. Fees It can seem pretty self-explanatory that any scholarship application that requires an application fee is a scam. However, a lot of these same applications offer a refund if you’re offered a scholarship. Because the application is not a genuine scholarship opportunity, the scammers simply claim that you aren’t qualified for the scholarship and profit off of your fees. 2. Search services There are several websites and services that claim to search and apply for scholarships on your behalf. Some of these search service scams require a payment upfront, but most of these services don’t require any form of payment. While it might seem safe to try a search agency that doesn’t require any fees, these scammers benefit from asking you invasive questions in an attempt to steal your identity. 3. Open eligibility Open eligibility scholarship scams include scholarship applications where anyone can apply, regardless of academic achievements or otherwise. It is important to remember that scholarships are only given to students with financial need and/or academic merit. If a scholarship application has no requirements in order to apply, then it is likely a scam. 4. Guaranteed services Nothing in life is guaranteed, and financial scholarships are no different. Any scholarship or service that offers a “money back guarantee” in their application disclosure indicates a red flag. Likewise, there are also thousands of scholarship scams that claim to guarantee a monetary prize. By definition, a scholarship is allocated based on your need and/or merit. If you are guaranteed a prize simply by applying, then there aren’t any credentials necessary for the scholarship. 5. Time sensitivity Many scholarships have deadlines for eligibility; however, you should be wary of any “scholarships” that claim to be “first come, first served.” Any type of application that claims to only be available on a first-come-first-served basis is an illegitimate opportunity. These types of scholarship scams also try to entice you to apply by stating that you are pre-qualified for their application. Unless you cross check your GPA, skills, family income, and other background information with each individual scholarship application there is no way to know if you are qualified. If a scholarship claims to be on a first-come-first-served process, then these scholarships likely have no pre-requisite qualifications. This makes it easier for you to notice this fraudulent activity. 6. Opportunities without applications These scholarship scams often contact you directly, claiming that you have won an exclusive scholarship. Typically these scammers call your cell phone in an attempt to overwhelm you and gain information to either steal your identity or to profit. It is important to keep records of any and all scholarships (or applications in general) that you submit. This way, you can check your personal references to see if you did indeed submit an application to a specific scholarship opportunity. If you need time to verify any information, you should always inform a scholarship representative that you need time to look over the information. If the representative becomes overtly brash or tells you that the offer won’t last long, this is a clear warning that the scholarship is a scam. 7. Broad generalizations Many scholarship scams will include one or more sweeping generalizations, which often seem like pushy advertisements. These generalizations or claims can range from, “You won’t get this information anywhere else,” to “thousands have applied.” Generalizations can also include claims that it has an absurdly high percentage of scholarship recipients. While it may seem enticing that a lot of students have received this scholarship in the past, any broad statement without proper evidence is likely a fictitious assertion. If you believe any scholarship opportunity might be fraudulent, you should report these scams immediately to the appropriate government agencies. The following government agencies work to prosecute scholarship scams: Federal Trade Commission (FTC). File a complaint using the  online complaint form  or by calling 1-877-FTC-HELP (1-877-382-4357) or 1-202-FTC-HELP (1-202-382-4357). State Attorney General, especially the Bureau of Consumer Protection U.S. Postal Inspection Service (USPIS). Call the Postal Crime Hotline at 1-877-876-2455. U.S. Department of Education, Office of the Inspector General.   You may report financial aid fraud to 1-800-MIS-USED (1-800-647-8733) or use the online  complaint form. The  National Fraud Information Center (NFIC)  forwards complaints to appropriate government agencies and can be reached through its website, fraud.org, or by calling 1-800-876-7060. Scholarship scams can also be reported to the  Better Business Bureau (BBB). The  College Scholarship Fraud Prevention Act of 2000 (P.L. 106-420)  offers clearly defined penalties for scholarship scams. It’s vital to note that you shouldn’t rely solely on an authentic name when reviewing whether or not a scholarship opportunity is safe. Often, scholarship scammers will include credible terms in their faux scholarship’s title, such as national, federal, or foundation. In the past, these same scholarship scammers have already created their own fake organization websites and testimonials to gain credibility. As a general rule of thumb, you should remember that the purpose of a scholarship or grant is to give you money to fund your academic endeavors, which is why it wouldn’t make sense for a scholarship to ask for any money before, during, or after the application process. Likewise, you can ensure your safety from scams by relying on credible sources to search for scholarships, such as your university’s scholarship website and financial aid office.
